Making soft toys had been Wendy's childhood hobby, and when her husband returned from the war in 1945 they started their own soft toy company. Wendy, who was ahead of her time, patented the first screw-in safety eye, in 1948. There were intended to stop small children from choking on boot button or other types of sewn on eyes. Wendy Boston did more than anyone else to improve the safety of teddy bears and other soft toys.

In 1954, Wendy Boston's first fully washable teddy bear was test-marketed. The unjointed bear, with its improved safety eyes, was made from nylon plush and filled with foam-rubber stuffing. When the teddy bears were launched on BBC television a year later in 1955, they proved to be very popular. To meet the increased demand for soft toys production focused on these new teddy bears. Wendy Boston Playsafe Toys Ltd was bought by Denys Fisher Toys in 1968, but sadly the company closed nine years later.
