The most important nation in the early history of the teddy bear was America. The story of how the teddy bear was born is a curious one, for the teddy bear was invented in one country, but given its name and adopted by another. In America, the link was established between the teddy bear and Theodore Roosevelt, while in Germany Margarete Steiff GmbH, was responsible for creating the world's very first teddy bear, in late 1902,

In addition, to America's foremost pioneering soft toy and teddy bear manufacturer's, such as the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co, their first teddy bears, although of high quality, were not labelled making them difficult to identify today. Many other manufacturers sprung up, around the New York area, quick to see the money making possibilites, whose histories are lost to us or lie waiting to be unearthed.
