The second important nation in the early history of the teddy bear was Germany. The story of how the teddy bear was born is a curious one, for the teddy bear was invented in one country, but given its name and adopted by another. In Germany, Margarete Steiff , was the company responsible for creating the world's very first teddy bear, in 1902, while in the USA the link was established between the teddy bear and Theodore Roosevelt.

In addition to Germany's foremost pioneering soft toy and teddy bear manufacturer's, such as Steiff, G. B. R. Bing, Schuco and Jopi, most early bears were made by cottage industry workers, destined for the Amercian market, and the histories of these teddy bears, are lost to us or lie waiting to be unearthed.
